-The Sunken Highway Hallucination -
Between 1990 and 1991 there were three separate incidents of the “Sunken Highway Hallucination” reported to Johnson City PD. The report states that all three individuals were found and revived on highway 290, several feet from their parked vehicles, with severe wounds on the back of their heads/necks, and chunks of flesh removed from the bottom of the thumb and wrist. The causes of the injuries are unknown. Two of the records were misplaced, this is the only one that survives on public record -
“I saw it first in one of those highway drive-by double-take ‘what-the-hell-was-that?’ kind of sightings, just a glimpse, just off a road there, just for a second. I full on pulled over and got out when a truck smashed its way between two parked cars, the driver barreled out, jumped off the road into it. It was kind of like this… pit… right where the off-ramp ended. Like the end of a long huge highway service road that tapered off into this massive asphalt cave. As if the highway veered off underground and just kept on going. I waited for a few cars to pass and ran across the four lane, and then I saw them, all these people… stuck knee-deep, waist-deep, neck-deep in the gravel. They all looked skinny and hungry and sick, with big dark circles under their eyes. I realized the rocks were moving, kinda churning them all down, into all that dark. It was tearing up their skin, giving them bruises. Strangest thing about it was… none of them seemed to care. They were all either just, staring sitting, digging around, two of them were… moving a table, one was shivering in a windbreaker, all the way down until the rocks just churned and swallowed them up, real slowly. Could take years. The wind was real cold, I remember that. I asked a man what he was doing there, he told me he started out ‘ditching for klonapin in south Houston, then just gave up and came here instead’ I had no idea what that meant. I asked another man, a former marine, I think, what he was doing there, he told me, very calm, ‘working on my castration. It’s almost done.’ I remember he had this black blood in his mouth. That’s the last thing I remember before I woke up on the road.”
